There are ten hands which can be played in most poker games. A standard deck of cards comprises of 52 cards split into 4 suits (Hearts, Diamonds, Spades and Clubs), with each suit having 13 consecutive cards from 2 to 10 plus jack, queen, king and Ace.
In home games, having two distinctive decks of cards is advisable, as this helps to maintain a consistency to the game. The spare deck should be shuffled and cut during the play so that is it ready for use. If the deck has become marked or soiled then the deck should be changed. This will prevent cards being identified during the game.

The object of the game is to win money or chips from the other players that are taking part in the game, all be it online or offline. Money or chips staked in the centre of the table (or pot) is claimed by the player with the winning hand. To determine the winner of a game, there are two methods used.
Poker is a gambling game that consists of more than one player. All poker hands must consist of five cards only. Depending on the type of poker played, the five cards can be chosen from other cards made available to them during play.
Building the many poker variations together is what determines the ranking of poker hands. Using a standard 52-card deck, it is possible that over 2.5 million (2,598,960) different five-card combinations are possible. These rankings are based on the likelihood of being dealt any particular hand, with the most valuable (Royal flush) being regarded as the least likely to be dealt. Two other key rules of poker are that aces can count as either highest or lowest card in any suit during play (determined at that start of play by the dealer), and that all four suits are equal in value.
Other than the universal hierarchical ranking of the poker hands, there are no official rules of play set for any of the variations of poker played. Only in organised tournament play are there rules set down by the organising build, but these may change from tournament to tournament.
