What are Blinds in Poker?
The opening bet in a game of Poker is known as a Blind. Its purpose is to ensure that there is always cash (or pot) on the table to play for, before the cards are even dealt. There are two blinds:
  • The Small Blind: the player sitting to the left of the dealer puts up the small blind which is half the minimum bet for the game.
  • The Big Blind: the next player clockwise round the table has to put up the big blind which is the minimum bet for the game.
The name Blind is given as the players have to bet without knowing what cards are about to be dealt.

Is there an advantage to being the dealer In Poker?
In any game of Poker there is always one player that needs to be dealer, working in a clockwise rotation. Different games define the dealer in different ways, either with a dealer disk, a letter D (online poker) or using a specific mark on the gaming table.

The advantage to being the dealer is that you get to watch the other plays being made before being forced to make your own play, putting you as dealer in a very strong position of control.

POKER ANIMALS

Quite a few poker terms are named after animals but not all of them are true characteristics of the animal.

BEAR describes a very conservative player who bets little and plays in an overly cautious manner. The player may also try to set different rules for the game or try to set very low betting limits

DUCK is simply another name for a deuce or a two

DOG is a bad hand, or a bad card

FISH is an unskilled or new player. the term comes from someone who would be better suited to playing "Go Fish" than poker. Fish bet wildly even when they can't beat their opponents hand and loses frequently with little knowledge of poker rules or etiquette

MINNOW is close to a “fish” but tends jump into a game even though they do not have the pot to compete, but still bets beyond their means and often loses

MONKEY is a person who gets taken easily and either loses a lot of money to better players, or is duped by a player who cheats

RABBIT is a lot like the “fish” but is a very timid player that asks rookie questions
